The moment I saw the tiny figure slumped against the massive trunk of the oak tree, I knew something was wrong. As I drew nearer, I began to hear the soft, pathetic sobs and hurried gasping breaths of the raven-haired girl huddled at the base of the tree. I knew her. Picked on for her height and delicate features, the girl feels that she doesn`t belong aywhere. Even with me. Sometimes she treats me like a stranger, sometimes she`s too afraid of the whole world to do anything but run away.
Just once, she opened up, forgot her fears and poured her heart and soul out to me. It only had to happen once... and then I loved her. I reached the tree. Slowly, carefully, I brushed her shoulder with my fingertips. She gasped, and whipped around to face me. I could feel my heart break as I saw the tears on her face, leaking out of her luminescent green eyes, leaving almost-clear tracks down her pale cheeks. Without a word, I opened my arms. As she did the one other time I caught her off guard, she jumped up and rushed into my embrace, her sobs louder than ever as she let all her emotion go.
Hours later, as I looked down at the sleeping girl leaning against me, her expression still sad, even in her dreams, I made a wish. A wish that she could be happy, and not cry anymore. Although I`d never seen her happy, I knew that everything woul be beter if she smiled.
